The Gateway Gazette – Board Game News – 21/10/2015

As the dust settles after convention season, gamers are busy enjoying their early presents from Essen or waiting in anticipation for those brand-new-cellophane-wrapped-joy-packages to arrive at their Friendly Local Game Store (FLGS). At the CBQ headquarters, we’ve been in deep conversations analysing our own personal gaming evolution, squealing while looking through each individual card in the latest released LCG from Fantasy Flight Game and putting pen to paper on a modern classic that involves jewels and some beautiful gaming chips that are a pleasure to hold. As we go to print today, here’s what we think you need to know about in the board game world.

Cthulu Wars: Onslaught Two is here to collect one of the largest tithe’s on Kickstarter to fund the Church of the Ancient Ones ™. The original Kickstarter recruited multiple cultists to the cause in 2013 and two years and 21 expansions later (yes, 21) Sandy Peterson and his devoted Ancient Ones can invade your table at varying pledge levels. With a title straight out of the 90”s, Mutant Chronicles: Siege of the Citadel is getting a reboot from Modiphius & Cabinet Entertainment. Combining the board game designing powers of Richard Borg (Command & Colours Series), Kevin Wilson (Cosmic Encounter) and Eric Lang (insert popular board game of last 3 years here: Blood Rage), Mutant Chronicles stars futuristic corporations and player characters called “Doom Troopers”. This cooperative dungeon-delvish premise already has me already looking for a pre-order button somewhere on the internet. Each Corporation has a special ability to enable players to keep the invading hordes at bay through campaign scenarios as players explore the layout of the treacherous citadel. It is aiming to be showcased at Essen 2106.

So I'm trying to BE and not IDENTIFY the Killer???

So I’m trying to BE and not IDENTIFY the Killer???

Cheapass Games is offering the Deluxe Edition of their classic title, Kill Dr Lucky over on Kickstarter at the cost of  $50 ( $16 shipping to SA). Explained as a type of inverted Cluedo (Clue for international readers), players will attempt to sneak around the house avoiding each other while plotting the demise of Dr Lucky. The good doctor has more lives than a cat it would seem, so only with the best weapons and Ninja-like skills can you be the first player to stand over his corpse. It’s been 20 years of killing medical practitioners and this update should keep doctors on their toes for years to come.

Have you loved conquering other armies in the Egyptian themed Kemet, or gotten a thrill from yelling “Release the Kraken” over a Cyclades board? Then you’ll be as excited as we were to learn of the new XL game in the series from Matagot called Inis. Set in the Ancient Celtic world, Inis has players controlling clans vying to be crowned King of the Isles by achieving one of three victory types. Using drafting and area control “dudes on a map” mechanisms, one can not simply go and conquer others through battle and blood. Sly diplomacy, deft movement and getting bards to sing of your great deeds will earn you a place amongst the great leaders of the Celtic Civilisation. Inis is scheduled for release in early 2016.

Due to delays of muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatories, we’ll be posting my thoughts on Game of Thrones the Card Game (2nd Edition) next week, along with another great gaming feature talking about local views on Essen coming soon.  Until then, tell us what your latest board game purchase was and what was the last game you won?
